Functional Analysis of Oral-digital Stereotypy in a Student with Profound Mental Retardation

The current study included two experiments that functionally analyzed stereotypical oral-digital behavior of one female student with profound mental retardation. An analogue functional analysis was used in Experiment 1 to detect the function of the student's oral-digital stereotypy which might serve to escape from task demands, obtain attention from others, or produce sensory self-stimulation. An analysis of sensory modalities was conducted in Experiment 2 to further analyze the possible sensory consequences maintaining the student's repetitive oral-digital. Results of the present study demonstrated that multiple consequences which included drawing attention from teachers and producing sensory stimulation could serve to maintain this student's stereotypy. The specific sensory function of this student's oral-digital stereotypy might be maintained by tactile stimulation. These findings were further discussed in terms of the sensory and social reinforcers that execute their impacts on this student's stereotypical behavior, and procedures used to detect those functions.

Objektif artikel ini adalah untuk meneroka saling perhubungan antara prinsip-prinsip Pengurusan Kualiti Menyeluruh (TQM), kepuasan hati staf; kepuasan hati pelajar dan pencapaian akademik pelajar. Elemen-elemen utama bagi pengurusan kualiti dalam konteks pendidikan dihuraikan secara ringkas, dan satu kerangka konseptual diketengahkan untuk menjelaskan saling perhubungan yang dihipotesis antara prinsip-prinsip TQM, kepuasan hati staf (pelanggan dalaman), kepuasan hati pelajar (pelanggan luaran) dan pencapaian akademik pelajar. Penulis merumuskan bahawa prestasi organisasi pendidikan dalam aspek kepuasan hati staf dan pelajar serta pencapaian akademik pelajar merupakan ukuran yang relevan bagi segala usaha penambahbaikan kualiti pendidikan, dan menekankan kepentingan kepuasan hati pelanggan dalaman serta luaran sebagai pengantara dalam perhubungan prinsip-prinsip TQM dengan pencapaian akademik pelajar.
 

 
Program Pendidikan Pencegahan Dadah SLAD: Adakah Ia Berkesan Mencapai Matlamatnya?

Pendidikan pencegahan dadah menjadi satu isu penting di sekolah-sekolah hari ini memandangkan penglibatan golongan remaja dengan dadah yang semakin meningkat. Walaupun golongan remaja dan muda tidak banyak terlibat dengan narkotik dan dadah lain yang amat berbahaya, namun semakin ramai golongan ini mula mencuba, menggunakan dan menyalahgunakan tembakau, dadah rekreasi, thinner dan gam. Ini terbukti dengan statistik yang dibekalkan oleh Agensi Dadah Kebangsaan. Satu daripada strategi untuk meningkatkan kesedaran mengenai dadah serta membina pertahanan dalam diri remaja untuk tidak mencuba dadah ialah pendidikan pencegahan dadah di sekolah-sekolah. Skim Lencana Anti Dadah (SLAD) merupakan ratu kaedah inovatif yang sedang digunakan sekarang ini di Malaysia untuk memberi pengetahuan dan kesedaran mengenai dadah di kalangan pelajar tingkatan 4 atau gred 10, di samping memberi input secukupnya supaya mereka yang mengikuti SLAD boleh bertindak sebagai rakan yang menasihati remaja lain untuk menjauhi dadah. Kajian ini menggunakan rekabentuk eksperimen pra-pasca ujian yang membandingkan kumpulan yang serupa di antara sekolah-sekolah yang menjalani dan tidak menjalankan program SLAD. Kajian ini menilai hasil program tersebut dari segi pengetahuan mengenai dadah dan tahap harga diri peserta SLAD. Kajian mendapati bahawa remaja yang mengikuti program SLAD mempunyai tahap pengetahuan yang tinggi mengenai dadah, bukan hanya selepas menjalani program tetapi enam bulan kemudian, di samping tahap harga diri yang juga lebih tinggi berbanding dengan pelajar dalam kumpulan kawalan. Ini menunjukkan bahawa program SLAD Berjaya meningkatkan pengetahuan peserta mengenai dadah dan meningkatkan harga diri mereka supaya mereka berasa yakin untuk membantu kawan-kawan lain untuk sedar serta menjauhi dadah.
 

 
An Ethnographic Study on the Use of English among Students at Kolej Universiti Islam Malaysia

This article is based on a four-week ethnographic study of a discourse community i.e. first and second year students of Kolej Universiti Islam Malaysia (KUZM). The researchers believe that the ethnographic approach could help provide valuable insights that would indirectly help them t o understand the use of the English Language by the discourse community. Tools of inquiry such as non-participant observations, specialist informants, interviews, and questionnaire as well as a re-examination of relevant documents were employed for data gathering purposes. The findings of this study indicate that English Language use at KUIM is not only dependent on the conventions laid down by the university but also by the discourse community. The paper discusses the implications of the findings on producing and designing meaningful teaching-learning material for the discourse community.
 

 
Examining Religiosity and its Relationship to Self-Control, Procrastination and Academic Achievement

This paper examines the relationship between religiosity level and general self-regulation as well as academic self-regulation. A study was carried out on 23 male and 122 female undergraduate students to examine the relationship between Islamic religiosity level and self-control, procrastination, academic control and academic achievement. Results indicate that religiosity is significantly correlated to all the above factors except for academic achievement. The authors examine the concept of volition or 'will-power' from the Islamic perspective and compare it with the Western perspective. They further propose an lslamic musabarah scale to measure an individual's level of volition according to the Islamic perspective.
 

 
Effective Higher Educational Practices - A Survey of Student Engagement

The quest for excellence in teaching and learning in higher education is a world- wide concern. Universities and colleges have responded to the challenge for higher quality in instruction by looking closely at the nature of the typical teaching and learning environment. It is concurred that the quality of undergraduate education largely depends on the quality of teaching provided by faculty. This paper reports on a research project that seek to obtain information about the undergraduate educational experience at a university. In particular, the study focuses on the extent to which undergraduate students engage in good educational practices. An instrument is administered to random samples of final year students to identify the level of student engagement and aspects of the undergraduate experience that could he improved. Findings revealed that the students perceived their campus environment as supportive of their academic needs. They also reported adequate levels of academic challenge and participation in enriching experiences. Nevertheless, students reported lower levels of interaction with faculty members and in active and collaborative learning. Results from the study point to the need for institutional improvement efforts in order to transform undergraduate experience into more holistic and engaging learning environments.
